Choosing the right school

Choosing the right school can be overwhelming. Several factors should be considered when selecting where you are going to spend the next four or five years of your life. If you prefer the intimate setting of a small class, a large university is probably not for you. A private college, where class size and student-teacher ratio are low, is a more likely fit. Reputation of the school is important but not the only thing to consider. What kinds of programs are offered? How many freshmen come back the next year? How many students actually get jobs in their respective careers within a year after they graduate? These are some of the questions that need to be asked.

Expense

The cost of college is increasing every year. Unless you are able to secure a lot of scholarship money or your parents are wealthy, a private school may be out of the question. Fortunately, you can still obtain a top-notch education from public state schools. Another thing to look at is how your financial package will be impacted if you do receive outside scholarship money.

Location

Location of the school is another factor. Do you enjoy being in the big city and having access to theaters, museums and other cultural events? A small rural college will be much quieter and have more limited access. The farther away you are from home, the more difficult and more expensive it will be. If you like to go home on weekends and holidays, you may have to choose a school that is within a certain radius of it.

Major

Although many high school kids enter college without knowing what they want to do, others have already narrowed it down. You want to select a school that offers a good curriculum in your major area of study. Also, it is prudent to be active in the extracurricular activities of the school. The college should offer clubs and organizations that you fit your interests.

When it comes to the college search and choosing the right school, doing your homework is essential.
