Movie Rentals

The hottest new releases

The movie rental industry is always being changed by new technology. New releases come out much faster, and the DVD industry soaring with the progress of Blu-ray and other high-definition innovations. All of this shows the major changes that the movie industry has undergone in the last several decades. Technological advancements have allowed individuals to watch the newest movies on an assortment of devices.

Rewind

There was time, many years ago, when standardization was the key to technology. Video rentals were confined to VCRs, and were then replaced by another well-known device: the DVD player. These were the two major formats of movie rental media that everyone became accustomed to.

If anyone wanted to rent a movie, all they had to was take a ride to the local video store to hopefully find the movie they wanted; after all these stores had limited quantities. This was the normal order of operations at the time: movies were rented at video stores.

Fast Forward

The golden age of the VCR movie rental was rather lengthy. It endured, changed and lasted as a mainstream format for over a decade. The progress to DVD, however, brought a swift change in the marketing of new movie releases.

The change in movie rental format was marked by a quick shift with several variations. DVD rentals were no longer the only method you could use to obtain new releases. Cable companies started offering the hottest releases through their on-demand services. This meant considerably greater convenience for the customer, because you didn't have to return the rentals, and they never ran out of stock.

The transition also added online movie rentals to the mix. This option is similar to the cable on-demand movie service in that it allows users to watch movies without worrying about returning them. This was followed by movie rental kiosk machines and lower rental cost structures. These changes have allowed consumers to rent in ways that are most convenient for them.
